For decades, the city of Ashland, Oregon was so strongly linked to the works of William Shakespeare that many people thought the play’s the only thing that happened in town.  At first blush, it is easy to see why this was the case, since the Oregon Shakespeare Festival has lured people from around the globe to see the works of the nearly mythical literary icon performed at a world-class level for over seventy years.  Yet as anyone who has recently visited Ashland can tell you, the association with The Bard merely scratches the surface of what is possible to enjoy within this modest community that lay between San Francisco and Portland.  Indeed, there is a host of sumptuous yet rejuvenating activities to explore here; visceral life experiences that simultaneously provide a means of luxury while maintaining a feeling of escape.

As the name implies, this luxurious B&B is located on the shady banks of Ashland Creek, and the decks here are wonderful places to spend a hot summer afternoon or for a glass of wine before heading off to the theater. The rooms, mostly large suites, have fun themes, including the Caribbean, Morocco, Denmark, and Taos. All are very tastefully decorated with antiques and art, and all but one have a kitchen or kitchenette. Although this inn is only two blocks from the heart of downtown, it feels like a remote forest retreat. Innkeeper Graham Sheldon has created what is without a doubt one of the finest bed-and-breakfast experiences in town. The seven suites, all with private decks on Ashland Creek, have been designed in international themes from exotic to elegant, furnished with antiques and fine art, and given private entrances and kitchens.

The Matsu suite is a Japaneses-theme space with raised platform bed, antique tansu, Asian artwork, and views of the koi pond. If you’re looking for cozy and sweet, consider the Caribe suite, a Caribbean vision in white and pastel. It’s the smallest room, but also the sunniest. Or, for something truly exotic, we like the Marrakech, with its vaulted-ceiling king bedroom, Moroccan antiques, and oversize deck.

I usually love the idea of staying at a Bed & Breakfast more than the actual stay. So many of them are way too cluttered, cutsie, chintzed and china-ed for my taste.

However, Ashland Creek Inn sets the bar at the tippy-top. If I had my way, all new B&B owners would be required to take a class from ACI’s gracious proprietor, Graham Sheldon, before they open.
